VW Jetta to be bigger and cheaper

Volkswagen of America is all set to launch the bigger, more athletic and cheaper 2011 model Jetta.

The new Jetta will have a base price of about $16,000. The current generation Jetta S starts at about $18,300 including destination.

The new Jetta goes on sale in October. It will be manufactured in VW's Puebla, Mexico, factory.

The new Jetta sedan is 3.5 inches longer than the current car with a length of 182.7 inches. The width remains unchanged at 70.1 inches and the height is 57 inches -- also the same as today's car.

The new Jetta has luxurious 38.1 inches of legroom, 2.6 inches more than the current car. The steering wheel and controls for climate, radio and a radio-navigation system have been redesigned.

Four engines will be available on the Jetta, including the 2.0-liter turbodiesel direct injection powerplant already offered on the new generation Jetta station wagon that went on sale last fall. A manual transmission is standard but the 2.0-liter diesel and gasoline versions will get a six-speed double-clutch transmission that VW calls DSG.

The new Jetta will be offered in several trim levels including a 2.0-liter GLI. The automaker also says the new Jetta has a more muscular and athletic look and sharper styling.
